Professor Han Seb Moon's team at Pusan National University has demonstrated a key technology based on two-photon interference between photons generated from an atomic system and a quantum dot.

Photons, tiny particles of light, can have different properties depending on their sources, making them difficult to work in harmony.

The study lays the groundwork for combining the fast photon generation of quantum dots with stable frequency-reference capabilities of atomic systems.

One of the major challenges in quantum communication is establishing stable connections between different quantum systems. The research team addressed this challenge by adjusting the quantum dot's temperature to match the wavelength of photons emitted by a cesium atomic source. With both sources exhibiting naturally similar spectral linewidths, the team successfully demonstrated direct two-photon interference.

Further, the research team demonstrated a remarkable advance by introducing direct two-photon interference between single photons generated independently by a cesium atom and a semiconductor quantum dot with two photons tending to exit together through the same output port of a beam splitter.

This advance provides a foundation for hybrid quantum networks connecting distant quantum devices. It is also expected to support long-distance quantum communication and the development of quantum repeaters, potentially enabling more stable connections over greater distances.
