The Upalokayuktha called upon government officials and employees to uphold honesty, loyalty, punctuality and humane values while discharging their duties, rather than confining themselves to merely following laws and rules.

Upalokayukta Justice K.N. Phaneendra was presiding over the Vigilance Awareness Week held at Zilla Panchayat auditorium on Friday.

Expressing concern over corruption in government sector, Justice K.N. Phaneendra said that Karnataka ranked third among the States in terms of corruption. Focusing on transparency, honesty and responsibility are important to eliminate the corruption, he said.

It is shameful that corruption continued to persist in our society even after the four decades of formation of the institution of Lokayuktha. It is responsibility of everyone to work towards eradicating corruption and building a corruption free society.

The Vigilance Awareness Week was observed annually from the last week of October to the first week of November to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel which falls on October 31.

‘Honesty for Prosperity’ is the theme of this year’s awareness week.

Punctuality does not mean arriving at the office on time and leaving at the stipulated time. They must be willing to devote additional time to complete their work whenever necessary, he said.

Mysuru District Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Commissioner of Police Seema Latkar, Zilla Panchayat CEO S. Yukesh Kumar and others were present.
