Two young children among four struck by driver in Richmond Hill - Toronto Star
A woman has life-threatening injuries after being hit Thursday afternoon. The Labour Ministry is investigating if she was a crossing guard.
The woman in life-threatening condition was wearing a reflective vest, police said, adding they could not confirm she was working as a crossing guard. Another woman and her children, aged seven and one, were treated and released from hospital.
Two young children were among four pedestrians struck by the driver of an SUV in Richmond Hill as school was letting out Thursday afternoon.
Emergency crews and investigators responded to calls of a crash near Major Mackenzie Drive East and Newkirk Road at about 3:15 p.m., police in York Region said on social media.
First responders found two women and two children — aged seven and one — who’d been struck by the driver of a vehicle, Insp. Rich Gaudet told reporters at the scene Thursday night.
One of the women was taken to a trauma centre in the GTA, where her injuries were deemed to be life-threatening, Gaudet said.
The other woman and her two children were taken to a local hospital but have since been discharged, he added.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, Gaudet said.
The woman in life-threatening condition was wearing a reflective vest, but investigators haven’t been able to confirm whether she was working as a crossing guard at the time, according to Gaudet.
Police notified the Ministry of Labour based on statements from witnesses, and the ministry is now investigating to determine if she was there in her capacity as a crossing guard.
There were “a lot of children” and adults crossing the intersection at the time, Gaudet said.
The intersection was expected to be closed for another four to five hours, he added. All roads that were closed in the area then re-opened at about 9:30 p.m., York police later posted.
