Thomas Castellanos to split QB snaps with Will Hammond as Texas Tech struggles crest - USA Today
Although the saga of Brendan Sorsby went out with a bit of a whimper, his shadow has hung over Lubbock, Texas, this season.
Will Hammond simply hasn't clicked in the Texas Tech offense, having thrown six touchdowns to six interceptions, and Texas Tech got a reality check in its loss to Cincinnati, where the Red Raiders were ultimately outplayed wire-to-wire, prompting a response from Texas Tech chairman and mega-donor Cody Campbell.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Red Raiders will make an unorthodox adjustment against Arizona this week, with Thomas Castellanos splitting reps with Hammond. Castellanos, who has had some eligibility battles of his own this year, is at his fourth school after transferring from Florida State.
Castellanos has seen the field a decent amount throughout the season, particularly in the red zone. But it will be interesting to see if he gets more reps between the 20s against a good Arizona team. He has four total touchdowns this year (two passing, two rushing) and an interception that opened the game against Houston.
Two quarterback systems rarely work, of course, with Utah being a notable exception β although that has the important distinction of having both quarterbacks on the field at once. But with Texas Tech and BYU both losing last week, the only safe route into the playoff for the Big 12 is going to be winning the conference. Otherwise, the College Football Playoff committee is in play.
Castellanos is still eligible to play. Though the NCAA has tried to keep Castellanos off the field through its 5-for-5 rules, a judge in the Kentucky court of appeals upheld the Oct. 16 preliminary injunction that kept Castellanos eligible.
He is currently in his fifth season. He was ruled ineligible on Oct. 2, but reinstated via a court injunction.
