The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) conducted a public hearing on the procurement of 7,800 megawatt (MW) of renewable energy by the Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TG-Genco) and Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TG-Redco) on Tuesday.
According to officials of the two power utilities, they were planning to procure 2,000 MW FDRE (Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy) on a round-the-clock (RTC) basis, 3,000 MW solar power along with battery storage (Battery Energy Storage System -BESS), which includes 1,000 MW each BESS capacity and another 6,000 MWh storage capacity, and 800 MW wind energy by TG-Redco. Further, 2,000 MW BESS under the FDRE framework is planned to be procured by TG-Genco.
Participating in the public hearing, former minister for energy and BRS MLA G. Jagadish Reddy sought to know the rationale behind procuring 7,800 MW renewable energy when the utilities were unable to supply even the available energy properly. He alleged that the government was planning to burden people further with procurement of additional energy and restrict farm power supply only to day time.
He requested the regulatory body not to approve the procurement proposals as the Genco was not running its generating (thermal) stations much below the rated capacity to purchase energy at higher rate from friendly companies. He brought to the ERC’s notice that power was not being supplied to agricultural pump-sets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in most parts of the State.
