The 23-year-old suspect had 'a number of interactions' with Toronto police officers before he was discharged from St. Joseph's hospital on Thursday.

Toronto police Insp. Kristy Smith on Saturday identified one of the three suspects wanted in the violent home invasion earlier this week in the Bridle Path neighbourhood.

A 23-year-old walked into a west-end hospital with a gunshot wound a little more than half an hour after a violent home invasion in the Bridle Path neighbourhood on the other end of the city, police say. Though he interacted repeatedly with officers at the hospital, the man now considered a suspect in the Thursday morning invasion was discharged and is currently at large.

On Saturday morning, Toronto police Insp. Kristy Smith identified the first of three suspects in the home invasion as Daijohn Richards, 23. Investigators believe he was mistakenly shot in his right shoulder by one of the other suspects during Thursday’s home invasion, Smith said.

Richards is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. He and the other two unidentified suspects should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

The early morning invasion on Hyde Park Circle in North York by masked intruders left a family of four with gunshot wounds and hammer injuries, with some remaining in hospital with “life-altering” injuries, police said Saturday morning.

Toronto police said they were called to the home at 3:43 a.m., with a separate police dispatch saying that a man with a gunshot wound arrived at St. Joseph’s Health Centre at 4:19 a.m. the same day.

“We arrived at the hospital, we made an investigation, and I know the question is going to come about why did we not arrest him at the time,” Smith told reporters on Saturday, describing police as having “a number of interactions” with Richards while he was on-site. No arrest was made before Richards was discharged and left the facility.

While Smith initially told reporters during the press conference that Richards was discharged from hospital on Friday afternoon, police later said by email that was a mistake, and Richards’ discharge was on Thursday “late morning.”

According to Toronto police data, there have been 112 home invasions in 2026, representing a 47.4 per cent increase compared to the same period
