Defence Minister Angie Motshekga said members of the Defence Force had to be deployed to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) almost overnight with little time to inform Parliament.

She said the deployment of 510 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was an emergency, but they still had an obligation to inform the legislature.

Motshekga was addressing the Joint Defence Committee on Friday morning about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s letter authorising the deployment until the end of November at a cost of R34 million.
