Prosecutors in Russia have sent a request to the Dutch government and others to detain and hand over officials of the International Criminal Court.

The Prosecutor General's Office in Moscow issued a statement on Thursday saying the handover targets nine ICC officials, including President Akane Tomoko.

The officials were convicted by a Russian court in December 2025. It sentenced Akane and others in absentia to prison terms ranging from three and a half to 15 years. Akane's exact term is unknown.

Russian authorities had put the officials on a wanted list after the ICC issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin and another official in March 2023. The court alleges that Putin is responsible for war crimes, citing the unlawful deportation of children to Russia from occupied areas of Ukraine.

The ICC is headquartered in The Hague. NHK talked to a Dutch justice ministry spokesperson who said, generally speaking, extradition to Russia has been banned since 2021 and that the country firmly supports the mission of the ICC judges and staff.
