PHF Announces Nationwide Schools Hockey League - ProPakistani
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced plans to launch a nationwide Schools Hockey League on November 15, offering young players monthly stipends and opportunities for international tours.
The league aims to revive hockey at the grassroots level and develop a stronger pool of players for Pakistanโs national teams.
The competition will begin with tehsil, district, and divisional rounds held simultaneously across the country, followed by provincial competitions in January and the national round in February.
The initiative was discussed during a consultative meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, chaired by IPC Secretary and PHF chief Mohiyuddin Ahmed Wani. Representatives from education and sports departments of all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad Capital Territory attended the meeting.
During the meeting, Wani urged officials to consider the leagueโs implementation a national responsibility, highlighting Pakistanโs past achievements in hockey and its status as the national sport.
PHF focal person Ehtasham Anwar briefed participants on the leagueโs structure and key features. The competition will operate under the PHF, with a dedicated chief executive officer and a steering committee headed by the federationโs president.
Under the proposed plan, players from the top three teams will receive monthly stipends of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500, and Rs. 5,000, respectively, for one year. The winning team and selected players will also be offered opportunities for international tours.
The league will also recognize the contributions of school heads and sports teachers through special awards.
To support both sports and education, 100 boys and 100 girls will be selected annually for summer camps providing hockey coaching, fitness training, and academic tutoring.
The initiative is also expected to encourage greater participation among schoolchildren, particularly girls, while creating a structured pathway for young talent to progress toward national-team selection.
Representatives from provincial and federal departments pledged their cooperation and agreed to align their sports calendars and activities with the leagueโs schedule.
