Noah Wyle has claimed Eddie Murphy once brusquely refused to sign an autograph for him when he was still a child, and the experience has meant he now always makes sure to interact with fans.

Wyle, 55, was recently named People’s Sexiest Man Alive.

During an interview on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Wyle recalled that he was just nine years old when he happened to meet Murphy, who was already a comedy superstar.

“I met Eddie once when I was a kid. I asked him for his autograph, and I said: ‘I really like you on SNL. And he goes, ‘What are you doing up that late?’” said Wyle.

The Pitt star continued: “And I said: ‘Can I have your autograph?’ He goes: ‘F*** off, man.’”

The Independent has approached Murphy’s representatives for comment.

Wyle added that the experience inspired him to always take the time to meet fans, saying: “I always sign an autograph. Whenever a nine-year-old needs an autograph from me, I sign that so fast.”

The former ER actor went on to say that the anecdote also inspired his children to come up with a sweet gift for him.

Wyle explained: “So, I’ve told this story in my house and last year for my birthday, my daughter didn’t know what to get me. My 10-year-old daughter printed up a picture of Eddie Murphy and then wrote on it, ‘Dear Noah, you’re a great kid, Eddie Murphy.’ And she spelled Eddie E-d–d-y.”

He added: “I have it framed in my office. It’s the greatest gift that my 10-year-old thought, ‘You know what?’ And then she came up with the story. She’s like, ‘Dad, you’re never going to believe who mom and I saw yesterday. Eddie Murphy. And we got what you’ve always wanted, his autograph.'”

Earlier this week, Wyle revealed that his children were unsure about People’s decision to name him the Sexiest Man Alive.

The actor said: “My son is super practical. He was like, 'Oh, this is going to make my life so much harder now. But that’s cool, Dad. But also, you invite a lot of haters too.’

“My older daughter was just like, 'No way, no way.' Because I think she’s going to tease me about this for the next 50 years... I am going to take a lot of ribbing from friends and family for sure."

His former ER co-star George Clooney has previously been named People's Sexiest Man Alive twice.

Asked how he thinks Clooney will respond, Noah said: “I think he’ll be amused and feel, hopefully, like a proud papa, that I’ve come of grey-haired age.”
