No new deal for Toronto, Doug Ford says after Olivia Chow’s reelection - Toronto Star
'We've given Toronto $9 billion,' Ford said. 'They have to be responsible for their own budget.'
“We’re on the same page, the mayor and I, when it comes to creating opportunities and growth. But you can’t always rely on the province,” Ford said.
Premier Doug Ford warns there will be no new deal from the cash-strapped province to bail out the City of Toronto.
“No, we’re willing to sit down. No, there’s no (new deal) 2.0 to answer your question directly,” Ford told reporters Wednesday at Queen’s Park.
Still, the premier emphasized his close working relationship with Mayor Olivia Chow, whose reelection last week he welcomed.
“But are we willing to sit down and talk to Mayor Chow about certain priorities? Maybe put policing into the subways to make it safer. We’re all in,” said Ford.
“Make sure we reduce the crime because the tragedy that happened in the Bridle Path (was) unacceptable,” he said.
Ford’s comments came days after Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy revealed the provincial deficit had jumped 22.5 per cent to $16.9 billion — greater even than at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
