In the medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS), the treasury also described the recent murders and attacks on women as a national crisis.

This has led to the government stating that it will be putting more money into its response to gender-based violence (GBV), with most of it going to hiring social workers.

The National Treasury has put a wider GBV allocation at R5.1 billion, mainly for the appointment of social workers in provinces.

National Treasury has set aside R3.8 billion over the next three years to appoint more than 3,500 social workers.
