State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha on Saturday said the counting of votes polled during the MPTC and ZPTC elections was progressing peacefully across Andhra Pradesh, with elaborate arrangements in place at the counting centres.
Mr. Punetha inspected the counting centres set up at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur district and reviewed the arrangements made for the Pedakakani and Phirangipuram mandals. He inspected the strong rooms where ballot boxes were kept under security. He interacted with counting agents.
Addressing the media, he said counting was underway in 13 mandals of Guntur district. As per the procedure, postal ballots were counted first. CCTV footage and video recordings of the counting process would be preserved for 60 days.
He appreciated the officials for making comprehensive arrangements and ensuring smooth counting.
Responding to representations from villagers of Kankanapalem in Palnadu district, he said the District Collector concerned would take appropriate steps to resolve their issues.
Mr. Punetha said a decision on elections to nearly 13,000 panchayats and 23 pending municipalities would be conducted shortly, in accordance with the Andhra Pradesh High Court's directions.
Further action would follow the court's orders, he said.
