The cast of Matilda reunited in London to celebrate the beloved film’s 30th anniversary.

On Friday, October 30, director and star Danny DeVito joined composer David Newman and several cast members at the Royal Albert Hall for a special screening accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. DeVito, 81, surprised the audience by inviting Mara Wilson, who played the titular character, onstage during the live narration.

“What a joy to celebrate with people who mean so much to me, with whom I share so many wonderful memories,” Wilson, 39, later wrote on Instagram. “Jaki, Kiami, Pam, Kira, David Newman, and of course, Uncle Danny, I love you all.”

Wilson, who was only 7 years old when she starred in the Roald Dahl adaption, developed a close bond with DeVito during filming. At that time, Wilson’s mother Suzie was diagnosed with breast cancer, and DeVito and his wife Rhea Perlman looked after Wilson (Suzie passed away shortly before the film was released, but DeVito arranged for her to see the film before its official release).

The 30th anniversary reunion was also attended by Pam Ferris, who portrayed the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, alongside former child stars Kiami Davael, Jacqueline Steiger and Kira Spencer Hesser.

Notably, Embeth Davidtz, who played Miss Honey, and Rhea Perlman, who portrayed Matilda’s mother, Zinnia Wormwood, were absent from the reunion.

“So so sad I couldn’t be there!” Davidtz wrote beneath Wilson’s Instagram post celebrating the occasion. “You all look wonderful!”
