Lula Ally Janones Meets Cristina Kirchner in Argentina to Discuss Strategies Against Milei - 03/11/2026 - World - Folha de S.Paulo
André Janones, a federal congressman from the Rede party and one of the stars of the campaign that reelected President Lula (PT), met with Sergio Massa and Cristina Kirchner in Buenos Aires on Monday (2). Argentina's former economy minister and former president, respectively, both are considered potential candidates for the presidency next year. She, however, remains ineligible: she is serving house arrest for corruption and is barred from running for public office for life.
"Our goal is just one thing: to sweep the far right off the world stage," the Brazilian lawmaker said as he left Cristina's home after a conversation lasting nearly two hours. According to him, the former president showed interest in understanding the social media results during Brazil's election. Earlier, Janones had met with Massa for about an hour to "try to bring some of those techniques" from Lula's campaign to the neighboring country.
For the congressman, defeating ultraliberal Javier Milei in 2027 will be a "crucial test" to show that Brazil's case was not an isolated one.
Argentina's opposition has other potential candidates, such as Governor Axel Kicillof, and its lack of unity benefits Milei. A Clarín analysis of 11 polls indicates that 57% disapprove of his government. Cristina did not rule out running again in an interview with The Washington Post.
