With Manchester United already down a goal against Chelsea on Saturday, Oct. 31, a red card to Lisandro Martínez saw things go from bad to worse.

Martínez was shown a second yellow card after a VAR review, with his high arm in the box also resulting in a penalty kick for the home side.

Cole Palmer deposited the ensuing penalty kick in the 64th minute, giving Chelsea a 2-0 lead at Stamford Bridge. The Blues would eventually win by the same scoreline, consigning United to a ninth straight match without a victory.

Martínez was initially not penalized for his high arm on Wesley Fofana from a Chelsea corner kick, but referee Peter Bankes was summoned to the monitor after the video assistant spotted a possible foul.

After a review, Bankes awarded a foul and produced a second yellow card for the Argentina international.

The second yellow came in the 63rd minute, just four minutes after Martínez picked up his first yellow.

The red card is likely to increase the scrutiny on Martínez, who was forced to apologize earlier this month after an explosive interview in which he called out the club's hierarchy.

After the game, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was tight-lipped on the Martínez incident.

"I've not looked at it to be honest, so I've not seen it," Carrick told TNT Sports when asked on the red card.

Asked whether he felt let down by the Argentine's red card, Carrick replied simply: "No."
