Lamar Jackson's return to action did not last long.

And now the Baltimore Ravens' quarterback will be on the shelf for some time โ€“ with his season potentially over, according to head coach Jesse Minter.

Jackson, returning after missing the last three games with an ankle injury, suffered a right hand injury โ€“ officially listed as a thumb injury โ€“ on the Ravens' offense's first play from scrimmage Sunday, Nov. 1, against the Buffalo Bills that knocked him out of the rest of the game. Minter would not specify the injury but said that Jackson will undergo surgery and go on injured reserve, meaning he'll miss a minimum of four games.

"That'll be a surgery deal, he'll go to (injured reserve)," Minter told reporters following the Ravens' 36-10 loss. "That's a tough deal."

The Ravens initially said Jackson was questionable to return before ruling him out later in the first quarter.

โ€œWhen it happened, I think at the time, youโ€™re just hoping that maybe itโ€™s something small,โ€ Minter said. โ€œI think pretty quickly you realize what kind of happened. You go next man up."

The CBS broadcast showed Jackson returning to the Baltimore sideline during the third quarter; the two-time MVP wore a brace on his hand and thumb area.

Jackson immediately went to the locker room and was replaced by backup Tyler "Snoop" Huntley, who once again stepped into the role of "QB1." But Huntley later exited the game after suffering a toe injury in the second quarter. He was in for Baltimoreโ€™s touchdown drive, scored by Derrick Henry and set up by Bills quarterback Josh Allen interception, but did not throw the ball. He was also ruled out.

Third-string, emergency quarterback Joe Fagnano โ€“ an undrafted rookie who played at Maine (2019-23) and Connecticut (2024-25) โ€“ entered the game.

The two-time MVP left the field in pain while holding the hand. Jackson faced pressure in the pocket and threw an incompletion to his right. A pair of Bills defenders hit him as he threw and Jackson, although he remained upright, immediately looked toward the hand and jogged off.

Jackson suffered an ankle sprain during the first half of Baltimore's Week 4 game, a victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Jackson's first game snap in almost a month came less than five minutes into the contest.

Jackson is no stranger to injuries. His 2021 and 2022 seasons ended prematurely in December due to Grade 2 ankle and knee sprains, respectively. He stayed healthy for the next two seasons before a hamstring pull cost him three games in 2025 and a back bruise cost him 1.5 games toward the end of the season.
