Keralam needs a strong cyber security shield (Kavacham) in order to prevent and to defend against cybercrimes, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said here on Saturday.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Community Led Initiative for Cyber Resilient Keralam (CLICK), an initiative of the Kerala Police. The event saw actor Mammooty being declared as the captain of the initiative.
A total of over 50,000 cyber cases were registered in the State in the past year alone. Many cases have not been reported so far. This shows the extent of cybercrimes in the State. Plans are afoot to begin cyber defence centres in 250 degree colleges in the State to step up vigilance against cybercrimes. The Higher Education department is providing all assistance in this regard. However, there is need to increase awareness among elderly people about how to ensure safe use of smart phones, so that they do not fall prey to cybercrimes and online frauds, Mr. Chennithala said.
The function also saw the declaration of cyber first responders, cyber safe villages, and cyber resilient centres. Mayor V.K. Minimol and State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar.
