The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has decided to go ahead with the written examination for direct recruitment to the post of principal of government PU colleges as scheduled on November 20 and 22. The lecturers’ association had submitted a representation seeking postponement of the examination by one month.

The KEA is conducting the examination for direct recruitment of government PU college lecturers to 216 vacant posts of Grade A government PU college principal. Lecturers who have served in a college for more than 10 years are qualified to appear for the examination.

A lecturer from a government PU college in Mangaluru, who has served more than 15 years and is slated to appear for the exam, said not much time has been given to aspirants for preparation. They have to write papers on Kannada, General Studies, and Karnataka Civil Services Rules (KCSR).

The KCSR paper is a lengthy one and a minimum of one month is required for preparation. With lecturers being involved in SIR and other non-academic work, they hardly had time for preparation, since issuance of notification of the examination by the KEA on September 3.

Ninge Gowda, President of Karnataka State PU College Lecturers’ Association, told The Hindu that the last date for filing application was October 30. Like other recruitment examinations, the KEA should have scheduled the examination after a period of 90 days from the last date. He said representations seeking postponement were made to Additional Chief Secretary, School Education and Literacy, Rashmi Mahesh, and KEA Director H. Prasanna.

An office-bearer of the association, however, said there are no minimum marks, and top scoring aspirants will be selected for the vacant posts. After a long time, the government is conducting selection process for direct recruitment to the post of principal. Of the total 870 vacant posts of principal, 216 posts were being filled through direct recruitment.

“The situation is the same for all lecturers. It is better for aspirants to appear for the examination as per the schedule than seek postponement,” the office-bearer said.

Mr. Prasanna said the KEA will go ahead with the written examination as scheduled with 2,839 candidates expected to appear for the exam.
