Glamorous mum dressing at my children’s west London primary school is extremely rare – and I’m relieved about that. I mean, who has the time or inclination to get up at the crack of dawn and play dress-up for the school gates when we barely have time to boil an egg (healthy breakfast klaxon) and remember a netball kit?

Obviously, normal rules don’t apply to A-list actors, of course, which is why we can only conclude Jennifer Lawrence has just declared her ambition to be a “sexy mom” at school drop-off.

The 36-year-old actor, who shares sons Cy, four, and a 19-month-old thought to be named Louie, with her art gallery director husband Cooke Maroney, has claimed that she wants to be seen as the “hot mom” at school drop-off and will even have a facelift to achieve her plan.

In comments that sound more like Lucy Punch’s character Amanda in BBC’s Motherland than an intelligent Oscar-winning actor, Lawrence told The Cut, the New York style magazine: “I want to be a sexy mom,” she declares. “At drop-off, I want to look like a woman that has her s**t together even when I’ve just woken up and don’t have my s**t together.”

The internet has reacted as you would expect: “Sexy mom sounds gross. Idk.“ While another Reddit user, in full eye-roll, speaks for the rest of us when she says: “I just think it’s odd to think, ‘I want to look sexy in the drop-off line at the school.’”

Ironically, until this moment, Lawrence has been mostly known for her minimal-effort, off-duty look, style dubbed “momboy”, a boyish off-duty vibe of baggy jumpers, messy hair and no makeup – a look I see taking off among chic mums.

Her only tip for “effortless” school-run dressing until now has been “you cannot ever have tiny on the bottom, baggy on the top... or you'll look like a lamp”.

However, Lawrence has a much more high-maintenance message for us, saying that in order to look like a “sexy mom”, cosmetic surgery is the way to go – and she’s only 36.

Whether it’s a full-on facelift – “Believe me, I'm gonna!” – or baby Botox injections, which she confessed to Vogue in September, or luxury facials which she gets for dewy and pretty skin, none of this is relatable to the rest of us who, in a cost of living crisis, are just wondering if we can afford next year’s school uniform.

I’m happy that Lawrence feels secure enough to be open about her cosmetic procedures – which, after The Cut interview last week, caused alarm with some fans claiming she looks “unrecognisable”. But dividing women into sexy and dowdy mum dressers? That isn’t helping anyone.

It’s why I believe we should ban the phrase “mum dressing” once and for all, an inherently misogynistic trope, which suggests women are somehow letting the side down for not looking our best as we deliver our darling children to the school gates.

The brutal truth is that for most of us, our hot mum moment is just getting there on time with a packed lunch and remembering it’s swimming day.

It’s no coincidence that Lawrence also made these “sexy mum” comments in The Cut while promoting her new hair care range Mes – a “biodesigned haircare” company, which includes a repair mask, styling serum, and volume mist. She said, “I feel like if my hair looks OK, then nobody’s gonna notice anything else about my face, clothes, or body.” She added: “I also can find myself using it to hide.”

Well, don’t mind the rest of us as we pop on a beanie and hide the unwashed truth.

And really, all this hot mum aspiration is just giving off some seriously embarrassing “MILF” energy at the end of the day. It’s not right at a time when most mums are at the gates swapping notes on how to stock up for the apocalypse. In truth, we’re much more likely to be investing in one of those LifeStraws all over Instagram, the personal water-filter straws loved by preppers, than we are to give a fig about some top-notch hair serum. In 2026, it’s the tough mum Sarah Connor from The Terminator that we all aspire to be.

If Lawrence wants to look together, she’d be better off going for the non-hot mum staples of jeans or combat trousers, a simple T-shirt, hair in a scrunchie and maybe some Doc Martens, with a coat we’ve just chucked on. Clothes chosen for convenience rather than style, which will see us through whatever storm is on the horizon.

When it comes to the school gates, day-to-day survival is what really matters. What is hotter than that?
