India face tricky WTC final road after South Africa's Cape Town Test win: Here's how
India's road to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final has become considerably tougher following South Africa's series-clinching victory over Australia in Cape Town. While the result has shaken up the points table, it has also underlined the challenge facing Shubman Gill's men, who have very little room for error in their remaining seven Tests.
India are currently fourth in the standings with 68 points and a points percentage (PCT) of 51.52 after 11 matches. They have two Tests remaining against New Zealand away from home, followed by a five-match home series against Australia. With only the top two teams qualifying for the final, India will need a near-perfect finish to their campaign.
The upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand could prove particularly important. If India win both matches, their PCT will rise to 58.97, giving them a much-needed boost. However, losing both Tests would bring their PCT down to 43.59, leaving them with an enormous challenge in the remaining five matches.
Even winning all five Tests against Australia after losing both matches to New Zealand would take India only to 59.26 per cent. That could leave them dependent on results elsewhere.
On the other hand, winning all seven remaining Tests would take India's PCT to 70.37, putting them in a strong position to challenge for a place in the final. Even six victories would give them 64.81 per cent. However, two or more defeats would make their qualification hopes considerably tougher.
The latest standings have undergone a significant reshuffle following South Africa's 176-run victory over Australia in the third Test in Cape Town. Temba Bavuma's men clinched the series 2-1, taking their PCT to 71.42 and moving into second place.
Australia, meanwhile, slipped from the top to third after their PCT dropped from 75 to 69.23 following the defeat. New Zealand have consequently moved to the top of the standings with 72.22 per cent, having collected 52 points from six Tests.
India also moved up to fourth after Bangladesh's defeat against the West Indies in Mirpur, which pushed them down to fifth.
With South Africa, New Zealand and Australia all occupying the top three positions, India's qualification equation has become increasingly complicated. Gill and Co. will need to take care of their own results while hoping their rivals drop crucial points in the remainder of the cycle.WTC POINTS TABLE AFTER CAPE TOWN TESTNew Zealand: Matches β 6 | Won β 4 | Lost β 1 | Drawn β 1 | Points β 52 | PCT β 72.22%South Africa: Matches β 7 | Won β 5 | Lost β 2 | Drawn β 0 | Points β 60 | PCT β 71.43%Australia: Matches β 13 | Won β 9 | Lost β 4 | Drawn β 0 | Points β 108 | PCT β 69.23%India: Matches β 11 | Won β 5 | Lost β 4 | Drawn β 2 | Points β 68 | PCT β 51.52%Bangladesh: Matches β 7 | Won β 3 | Lost β 3 | Drawn β 1 | Points β 40 | PCT β 47.62%England: Matches β 16 | Won β 7 | Lost β 8 | Drawn β 1 | Points β 74 | PCT β 38.54%Sri Lanka: Matches β 6 | Won β 1 | Lost β 2 | Drawn β 3 | Points β 24 | PCT β 33.33%West Indies: Matches β 13 | Won β 3 | Lost β 8 | Drawn β 2 | Points β 42 | PCT β 26.92%Pakistan: Matches β 9 | Won β 2 | Lost β 7 | Drawn β 0 | Points β 5 | PCT β 4.63%- Ends
