Greenwood Becomes First Player in 7 Years to Score a Free Kick Against Liverpool in UCL Since Messi in 2019 - Thairath English
Mason Greenwood of Fenerbahçe became the first player in seven years to score a free kick against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, following Lionel Messi's feat in 2019.
On 5 Nov 2026 GMT+7, Mason Greenwood, playing for the prominent Turkish league team Fenerbahçe, became the first player in seven years to score a free kick against Liverpool, known as the Reds, in a match where his team won 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League, replicating Lionel Messi's achievement from 2019.
Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, scored in the 29th minute after Fenerbahçe earned a free kick outside the penalty area due to a foul by Dominik Szoboszlai. Greenwood took the free kick, and the ball deflected off Liverpool opponent Jérémie Jakhet, altering its path beyond goalkeeper Alisson Becker's reach.
This made Greenwood the first player in seven years, since 2019, to successfully score a free kick against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, following Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who did so while playing for Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-finals in May 2019.
