Google brings AI search ads to India: What this new update means for you
Google is making a big change to how its AI-powered search results look. The tech giant is officially bringing advertisements into its AI search answers in India and nine other countries, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan (limited to text ads), the Philippines, and Singapore.
Starting in the fourth quarter, if you ask Google a complex question and get a conversational AI answer, you will see ads related to your search right next to or inside the response. Along with the initial countries scaling now, Google is also planning to expand this update to users in the UK, Mexico, and Brazil later in Q4 2026.
To keep things transparent and ensure users are not confused, Google confirmed that all of these advertisements will carry a clear "Sponsored" label. What Google is saying
Dan Taylor, Vice President of Global Ads at Google, confirmed the worldwide expansion in a post on X (formerly Twitter): "As Search becomes more conversational, our research shows that people are comfortable with ads in AI Mode and find them highly relevant. We're excited to expand this high-value experience to more countries in Q4."
Taylor has also highlighted how AI is changing the way people look for information. Because search is becoming more conversational, users are typing much more. According to Google's data, queries in AI Mode are, on average, three times longer than traditional Google searches. How businesses benefit
According to Google, the new ad format is already working well. The company's data shows that users click on these sponsored AI links just as often as they click on regular product listings. Advertisers also get a smooth transition. Brands will not need to spend extra money or build new campaigns to appear in these AI answers. Google will automatically pull from their existing ad setups.
While India and the other nine countries will experience standard AI Mode ads, the US is getting a more advanced version called "multi-turn ads."
When you use AI search, you usually ask follow-up questions to understand a topic better. With multi-turn ads, Google will show relevant advertisements during this back-and-forth chat. This feature aims to show users the right products or services just as they are actively researching or comparing options.
Finally, Google clarified a major concern about AI bias. The company confirmed that paid ads will not change or influence the actual information in the AI-generated text. The AI answers will remain neutral, and the sponsored links will simply appear alongside them as extra suggestions.- EndsAlso Read | Google is changing Gemini AI plans from October 9, here is what it means for youAlso Read | Sridhar Vembu says only humans with meta level skills will benefit from AIAlso Read | Proton says it will stop hiring engineers, AI will be used for work
