Globo and Netflix expand content partnership - Valor International
Netflix announced on Monday (19) a licensing agreement with Globo that will bring 18 of the Brazilian media group’s original productions—including films, soap operas, and series—to the U.S. streaming platform starting in December.
The deal, the largest between the two companies to date, builds on individual licensing agreements struck over the past few years. Initially, it covers 14 films, three soap operas, and one series, which will be available with dubbing and subtitles in multiple countries.
The films include Walter Salles’s “I’m Still Here,” which won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2025 and will be available only on Netflix in Brazil, and “Vitória,” starring Fernanda Montenegro, which will be released worldwide.
The lineup also includes soap operas such as “India: A Love Story” (“Caminho das Índias”), written by Glória Perez and winner of the International Emmy for Best Telenovela in 2009. The title will be licensed for the U.S. and Latin American markets.
In addition, seven seasons of the comedy series “Vai Que Cola,” created by Leandro Soares and directed by João Fonseca and Regis Faria, will be available exclusively on Netflix in Brazil.
The release schedule for the productions runs through mid-2027.
“For decades, we have been committed to bringing the richness of our culture to audiences around the world. By combining that experience with Netflix’s global reach, we are taking another step toward introducing Brazilian creativity to new audiences, expanding the presence of Brazilian audiovisual productions abroad and strengthening their international recognition,” Pedro Garcia, Globo’s head of rights, said in a statement.
“We hope this agreement will be just the first step in a long-term partnership between two companies that share the ambition, creative excellence, and commitment to taking Brazilian culture even further,” said Elisabetta Zenatti, Netflix’s vice president of content in Brazil, in the statement.
Last week, Netflix raised its subscription prices in Brazil, with the new rates taking effect in October. Increases range from 20% for the Premium plan, from R$59.90 to R$71.90, to 23.9% for the Standard with Ads plan, from R$20.90 to R$25.29.
The U.S. streaming company also carried out its largest round of layoffs since 2022 last week, cutting about 1,000 jobs across its offices worldwide.
As part of the restructuring of its content operations, Netflix also dismissed chief content officer Bela Bajaria and Dan Lin, head of its film division.
