A Georgia woman left her baby with auto shop staff only to return with a knife and demand the infantβs return, according to a report.
βLaraven Davis handed her six-month-old daughter to employees at a Jiffy Lube store in Mableton, a city just 20 miles northwest of Atlanta, around 8.30 a.m. Saturday.
βShe came up to me and my coworker, Elijah, with a stroller,β assistant manager Jarayya Mayes told Fox 5 Atlanta.
βAnd she was like, hey, doesn't my baby look so cute? Is my baby so cute? We were like, yeah, babies adorable. And she was. She was absolutely adorable.β
Mayes said she had never spoken to Davis previously but had seen her walking near the business.
ββShe just kept saying: βThe paperwork is in the bag,ββ Mayes told the outlet. ββYou guys can just have her if I donβt make it back.ββ
βConcerned by the womanβs remarks, Mayes told Fox 5 Atlanta she called 911. Around 15 minutes later, the mom allegedly returned with a knife.
According to Mayes, the mom said: βWhereβs the baby? I need the baby. I gotta go, I gotta go. Some stuff just went down. I gotta go.β
Emergency dispatchers told Mayes not to let Davis leave with her baby as cops were on the way.
Officers arrested Davis and she was later charged with child abandonment and reckless conduct.
βThe baby was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Cobb County Police Department told The Independent.
ββIt was determined that the baby was wearing soiled clothes and had multiple rashes despite being in overall good health,β a spokesperson added.
The infant has been placed in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services since Davis has no other family members to care for the baby.
Davis remains in custody at Cobb County Adult Detention Center, according to jail records reviewed by The Independent.
ββAs a mom, it broke me down; I did cry a lot,β Mayes told Fox 5. βI was just a mom looking out for another kid.
ββI just couldnβt let that baby go like that. That was heartbreaking.β
The Independent has reached out to the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services and Jiffy Lube for comment.
