Gauteng deploys wardens to clamp down on illegal booze sales - TimesLIVE
With pens-down parties and the festive season fast approaching, Gauteng is deploying 80 of its wardens to curb underage drinking, illegal liquor trading and alcohol-related crime and violence.
This week the traffic wardens are undergoing training to serve as liquor inspectors under the Gauteng Liquor Board, strengthening the province’s capacity to monitor and enforce liquor legislation.
The head of the Gauteng economic development department, Motlatjo Moholwa, said the initiative reinforces the importance of balancing economic growth with public safety.
“While supporting legitimate businesses and creating economic opportunities, the government remains committed to protecting consumers, safeguarding communities and promoting a responsible liquor industry.”
He highlighted the need to combat underage drinking, illegal liquor trading and alcohol-related crime and violence, while ensuring that liquor outlets comply with licensing conditions and operate responsibly.
The community safety department said the programme also marks the start of the province’s festive season readiness campaign, “strengthening efforts to ensure that liquor traders operate within the law and that communities are protected from the risks associated with non-compliance and irresponsible liquor trading”.
