Filipino artworks to ignite Spain’s Prado Museum
MANILA, Philippines — The single largest collection of works by Filipino old masters will wow the world when it opens at Spain’s national museum, the Prado, in November 2027. Conceived by the Prado itself, the exhibit will showcase more than 70 Filipino works of the 19th century – and will be the first-ever of its kind.
The Prado is one of the globe’s greatest art museums, with a priceless collection of Velasquez, El Greco and Goya. The exhibition will finally give Philippine art its richly deserved place alongside that renowned company. The prestige conferred will be incalculable and underlines the country’s largely untapped soft power in art and culture.
A high-level mission led by the museum director, Miguel Falomir, is in Manila now as part of the last stages of preparation. With him is Francisco Tardio, the Prado’s global head for international relations.
Seven years in the making, the show will be curated by Carlos Navarro, the institution’s art historian and 19th-century specialist. The Filipino masterworks represent “a most important legacy that speaks to the complex, and at times, difficult history shared by Spain and the Philippines,” said Navarro.
All but one or two of these masterpieces have not been seen by the public in the Prado since 1898, when the Spanish empire in the Philippines ended, and the works were removed from exhibition walls or put into storage as a symbolic protest.
After almost a century and a half, the Prado will finally bring them back together to recreate a long-lost time when Filipino artists brought glory to their home country by earning Spain’s highest accolades.
The last quarter of the 19th century was the high tide of Filipino art, in terms of artistic excellence and its impact on the international stage, driven by the genius and charisma of its major figure, Juan Luna.
Luna, however, was not an isolated case but was a part of a broader movement known as the ilustrados (or the educated elite). Jose Rizal was an important part of that group and took inspiration from Luna.
“These young men cultivated themselves in the arts, literature, and sciences – including medicine and ethnography – with the utmost commitment to excellence. Their ambition extended well beyond personal advancement: it was, above all, the assertion of a collective Filipino presence at the highest levels within the cosmopolitan circuits of the Spanish Empire,” Navarro explains.
The exhibition will also spotlight many of the unsung heroes of Philippine art of that period. Among these, says Navarro, “Lorenzo Guerrero stands out – not only as a painter of great sensitivity, but also as a formative teacher and mentor to a whole generation of Filipino artists. Alongside him, figures such as Miguel Zaragoza and Melecio Figueroa will also be represented. Their contributions to painting and sculpture, respectively, are of exceptional merit.”
The landmark show has received the enthusiastic support of Falomir, the Prado’s director – whose leadership, throughout the project’s many years of gestation, reflects a keen sensitivity to postcolonial discourses and a renewed attention to the art of the Hispanic world. Slated for Autumn 2027, painstaking restoration is already underway to prepare the works so they can be viewed in as original a condition as when they were created.
The breakthrough show will be followed a year later by a second exhibit combining important paintings from Filipino collectors, making it a doubly significant international platform for Philippine art.
“To revisit this era is to rediscover a time of remarkable creativity and ambition, when Filipino artists engaged with the world and, in doing so, helped shape a new sense of identity and possibility for their nation. It is a story that continues to move and inspire us today,” said Navarro.
“The exhibitions offer unique opportunities to explore the work of Filipino artists as perhaps the world’s first transnational figures, whose lives and art were shaped by movement, exchange, and dialogue across cultures,” he added.
The show will also mark the 80th year of Philippine-Spanish diplomatic relations. The landmark show is in cooperation with the Spanish embassy in Manila, the Philippine embassy in Spain, the National Museum of the Philippines, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
