Billionaire Elon Musk has stirred up a new controversy on his social media platform, X, after responding to a user's technical criticism. The argument shines a light on Musk's ambitious dream to move artificial intelligence (AI) data centres into space, and the massive scientific hurdles standing in the way.The X Exchange

The dispute began when an X user named Jan Broersen publicly questioned Musk's understanding of basic science. Broersen pointed out a major flaw in Musk's recent claim that cooling powerful data centres would be easier in space. Instead of defending his idea with science or engineering logic, Musk gave a blunt, personal reply: "You are fully retarded."

Broersen had expressed profound disappointment in the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. He stated that while he used to respect Musk’s engineering skills, he lost that respect after hearing this orbital cooling theory.

Broersen explained that a vacuum is actually a perfect insulator, meaning heat gets trapped. Because heat in space can only escape through radiation, he argued that giant space data centres are unlikely to become a reality in our lifetime.

This heated exchange happened just as Musk is heavily promoting the idea that the future of AI belongs outside our atmosphere. As Musk posted, nearly 100 per cent of future superintelligence computing will happen in deep space.

He believes this shift is necessary to save Earth's resources and RAM supply so they can be used to build humanoid robots.

The idea of off-planet computing is slowly gaining interest in the tech industry, though on a much smaller scale than Musk's vision. For example, Google recently teamed up with SpaceX to launch "Project Suncatcher," an experimental satellite designed to process quick AI tasks in orbit for a short time. Why Cooling in Space is a Massive Challenge

Elon Musk has recently argued that "cooling is actually much easier in space than it is on earth". Pushing a massive vision for off-planet artificial intelligence, Musk predicts that AI computing capacity in low Earth orbit will surpass new ground-based facilities by the end of 2028, claiming that "ground-based compute is simply trivial" by comparison.

To achieve this, SpaceX has reportedly applied to launch up to 1 million data centre satellites, with the first AI-equipped satellites expected to launch in late 2027.

However, keeping massive, continuous AI systems powered and cooled in space remains an astronomical physics challenge that cannot be ignored.- EndsAlso Read | Elon Musk says future AI computing will be 100% in space, here's whyAlso Read | Elon Musk says Grok Bot is too expensive to run, calls costs unsustainable as users hit limitsAlso Read | Google Dreambeans arrives in India, the AI app turns your online life into a storybook
