Election day glitches: a cop with political posters, a drunken voter and a collision with a cow - TimesLIVE
A police officer was removed from a KwaZulu-Natal voting station on Wednesday morning after she arrived in a vehicle branded with posters from a political party, according to police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda.
The sergeant was removed from her Mphithini-area voting station post, in Donnybrook, with the possibility of internal disciplinary processes being instituted following her alleged unprofessional conduct.
Netshiunda said voting at the poll station continued seamlessly.
Maj-Gen Phumelele Makoba, KZN’s acting provincial commissioner, said unprofessional conduct by police officers would not be tolerated. “We reminded our officers of their responsibilities and how they must conduct themselves. Apart from internal disciplinary steps, we shall also investigate the contravention of any applicable Act ... and open criminal proceedings if investigations direct us to do so.”
In a separate incident, a suspect was arrested for assaulting police officers at a voting station in Umlazi on Wednesday morning.
The suspect arrived at a voting station at M Section in Umlazi seemingly under the influence of alcohol. He assaulted police officers who attempted to contain his unbecoming behaviour at the voting station.
The suspect was arrested for assault. Other charges relating to the contravention of the Electoral Act may be added.
In a further incident, three K9 police officers sustained minor injuries when the vehicle they were driving in to a voting station collided with two cattle in the Ibisi policing precinct.
The officers were declared fit to proceed with their duties.
