On 3 Nov 2026, Mr. Nirat Pongsitthaworn, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), stated that thunderstorms often bring lightning which can cause severe danger to life and property, especially for those in open areas or near buildings and conductive objects. For safety, DDPM recommends tips to prevent lightning hazards, survive, and properly assist victims as follows.

At the sound of thunder, quickly enter a sturdy building or shelter inside a vehicle with doors and windows fully closed. Avoid holding metal objects and stay away from large trees, utility poles, billboards, and isolated structures that pose higher lightning risk. If no shelter is available, crouch down with feet together, head lowered, minimizing ground contact, and never lie flat.

Keep doors and windows tightly closed. Avoid using electrical appliances, devices connected to external wiring, and wired telephones. Also, avoid bathing, washing dishes, or touching water faucets and metal pipes. It is advisable to unplug appliances before storms arrive.

Lightning strike victims do not carry residual electrical current and can be safely assisted. First, ensure the area is safe, then move the victim to a safe location and check responsiveness and breathing. If unconscious and not breathing, call emergency number 1669 and begin CPR immediately. Use an AED if available, following device instructions.

Furthermore, DDPM urges the public to closely monitor weather forecasts and official warnings from relevant agencies, avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms, and strictly follow safety guidelines.

The public can also follow disaster news on the Department’s Facebook page DDPMX @DDPMNews, Line @1784DDPM, report incidents and request help via the Line account "DDPM Incident Report 1784," or call the 24-hour emergency hotline 1784.
