Demolition of 90-Year-Old Historic Building Stopped - ProPakistani
The district administration in Hyderabad has stopped the demolition of a 90-year-old historic building after it was partially demolished despite being recommended for heritage protection.
The building, constructed in 1936 near Faujdari Road, was partially demolished before City Assistant Commissioner Noor Hussain intervened and stopped the work.
The Sindh Culture Department had recommended the property for heritage protection in February 2025 due to its architectural significance. However, its official heritage status is still awaiting approval from the relevant technical committee.
The building was recommended for protection because of its distinctive architectural features, including projecting balconies with carved stonework and large windows with wooden panels. The recommendation also noted that the structure required repairs due to potential public safety risks.
Following the incident, the assistant commissioner issued notices to the individuals claiming ownership of the property, directing them to submit ownership documents, permits, and relevant approvals within three days.
The Culture Departmentβs Antiquities and Archaeology wing also issued a notice over the unauthorized demolition, directing the property owner to appear before the department on November 2.
The department stated that the demolition violated Section 10(i) of the Sindh Cultural Heritage (Preservation) Act, 1994, as the work was carried out without prior permission.
The owner was ordered to stop all activities at the site or face legal consequences.
Meanwhile, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has been asked not to approve any demolition or construction work until the Technical Committee on Sindh Cultural Heritage makes a final decision on the propertyβs status.
