Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen called on his party to commit to a “bold agenda” targeting powerful corporate interests before lawmakers decide whether to support Chuck Schumer or another candidate for Senate Democratic leader, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen called on his party to commit to a “bold agenda” targeting powerful corporate interests before lawmakers decide whether to support Chuck Schumer or another candidate for Senate Democratic leader, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

Van Hollen's comments came after Democrats secured significant victories in the midterm elections, winning control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate and delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump.

“No one should be committing to anybody as the next Democratic leader without having that conversation,” the Maryland senator said in an interview with Bloomberg. “We need commitments.”

Schumer, who has led Senate Democrats for years, expressed confidence that he would retain his leadership position, saying the party should focus on the priorities of the American people.

“The issue is not me. I’ll be reelected as majority leader. But the issue is focusing on the American people and what they want,” he told reporters.

Van Hollen argued that the election victories reflected voters' desire to protect democracy and their economic interests, rather than a coordinated strategy by Democratic leaders in Washington.

He called for a more populist approach focused on working-class Americans and challenging the influence of billionaires and major corporations.

“Working people have been screwed for way too long, and we need to unrig an economy that’s been built to serve billionaires and big corporations,” Van Hollen said, according to Bloomberg. “It’s not a time for incrementalism. It’s a time to move forward a very bold kitchen table agenda.”

The senator's remarks signal growing pressure from the Democratic party's progressive wing for a change in leadership priorities following the election victories.

Van Hollen, who campaigned extensively for Democratic candidates and has expressed interest in a possible 2028 presidential run, also criticized the party establishment's involvement in primary contests, highlighting disagreements over candidate endorsements in Michigan.
