About 1pm on Friday, the State Crime Command's Cybercrime Squad was alerted to a suspected data breach at NSW Health.

In a statement, NSW Police said cybercrime squad detectives were leading the investigation under Strike Force Civic and were working closely with NSW Health and Cyber Security NSW.

Health Minister Ryan Park said he was first made aware of the cyber breach in "the last couple of days".

He said he was unaware of who was behind the suspected attack.

"Police made it clear that given it is a live investigation, they wanted to determine when that [news] goes public," he said.

Mr Park reiterated that at this stage no patient data had been impacted, nor was there a clinical risk or service that had been compromised.

"We have very robust cybersecurity systems in place."

Transport Minister John Graham told 702 ABC Sydney the incident was a "big reminder about the importance of cybersecurity".

"It is getting more difficult, there's no question about that," he said.

"Whether you're in government or in a private company or just as a citizen, it is an increasingly difficult area."

Mr Park shared Mr Graham's sentiment that it was increasingly important for government agencies to strengthen their systems to combat criminal activity and threats.

It was expected NSW Police, NSW Health and Cyber Security NSW would address the media on the issue later today.
