Major cryptocurrency exchange Binance says it has confirmed what appears to be unauthorized access to its system resulting in the loss of over 6 billion dollars.

The company announced on Thursday that it suffered a security breach, adding that deposits and withdrawals have been temporarily suspended. It said its initial investigation suggests that attackers are likely to have compromised an engineer's laptop and made unauthorized withdrawals possible.

The total impact of the attack is estimated at about 6.3 billion dollars. The company said it will cover all losses.

It also said about 3 billion dollars of assets have been frozen. Western media reports say the incident may be the biggest-ever crypto heist.

The Wall Street Journal quoted multiple cybersecurity research companies as saying that the involvement of a hacking group allegedly linked to North Korea is suspected.
