The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday (October 31, 2026) directed the immediate deactivation of the login IDs of all computer assistants working on the ECINET Portal in the offices of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) across the State.
The action comes in response to complaints and information from Pilibhit district regarding the misuse of login IDs provided to computer assistants, who work as voter registration centre operators, on the ECINET portal, the State CEO’s office said in an official statement.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, had alleged that the details of 13,150 registered voters were altered on the rolls in the Pilibhit Sadar Assembly seat, even though their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers and serial numbers remained exactly the same. Subsequently, in the 347-Azamgarh constituency, 13 entries bearing the name Vikas Yadav appeared in the electoral rolls.
On October 25, the Uttar Pradesh CEO had ordered the re-verification of all entries made by computer assistants since the publication of the final electoral rolls, after the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise, on April 10.
On Saturday (October 31, 2026), CEO Navdeep Rinwa asked EROs to submit a compliance report on the deactivation of login IDs at the earliest, and directed the immediate termination of services of the computer assistant involved in the Pilibhit case.
“The concerned firm has been directed to immediately terminate the service of the involved outsourced computer assistant in the case of Assembly Constituency 127-Pilibhit,” the statement said.
There are around 806 computer operators deployed in ERO offices in U.P. Each Assembly constituency has two computer assistants working as operators at voter registration centres in ERO offices.
Gorakhpur-registered KND Engineers and Consultants (India) Private Limited is currently the company to which the hiring of computer operators is outsourced, but sources told The Hindu that while the companies keep changing each year after a tender process, the employees are drawn from the same list available on the government portal, and most have been working as operators for eight to 10 years.
The sources also said that access to the portal had been provided to the computer assistants, as many booth-level officers (BLOs) were not initially adequately trained to work on the BLO app.
