A fire broke out at a military base in the western Canadian province of Alberta on Saturday, reportedly leaving at least seven people dead.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on social media that a serious incident creating a major fire had occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.

Details of the damage remain unknown, but a local TV network quoted military sources as saying at least seven people had been killed and dozens had been injured.

The report said that a gas line or gas well was hit during a live-fire training exercise around 4 p.m. local time on Saturday.

Canada's public broadcaster CBC reported that strengthening and shifting winds may have caused the fire to spread.

It said CFB Wainwright is the country's principal base for live-fire training exercises and has about 1,000 military personnel and civilian workers on a regular day, and more during special training sessions.
