A warrant has been issued for Richards’ arrest, while two other suspects remain unidentified. The police service released an image of Richards and noted that he may show signs of a shoulder injury.
“Investigators believe Daijohn Richards was accidentally shot by one of the other suspects during the struggle inside the victims’ home,” Toronto Police Service said in a press release.

The authorities were notified after Richards was at the hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound. “He walked on his own to the hospital. After being notified we arrived at the hospital and made an investigation,” Smith said.
The suspect was discharged from hospital Thursday late morning. He wasn’t arrested at the hospital because “we don’t just go off of suspicion,” Smith told a Saturday morning press conference, adding there needs to be reasonable grounds to make an arrest.
A family asleep in their home on Thursday were subjected to “appalling level of violence all for the purpose of acquiring property,” Smith said. The attack, at approximately 3:40 a.m., in the Post Road and Hyde Park Circle area, left four members of the family injured: Toronto CEO David Morton, 75, his wife Doriana Zohil-Morton, 64, and two daughters Maggie and Cristina.
The family was awakened by three masked suspects entering into their bedroom with firearms and hammer. During the incident three of the family members were shot. Two were struck in the head with hammer. All four were taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspects fled in an SUV.
Morton, 75, released a statement on Friday confirming traumatic details of the attack and expressing concern about “the increasing violence associated with home invasions and the safety of families throughout Toronto.”
On Saturday, Smith said some of the victims of the home invasion have been released from the hospital while others are still in the hospital. “Through the grace of God, they are in life-altering condition and not life-threatening condition,” Smith said.
Richards is wanted on Canada Wide Warrant and faces four counts of Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, four counts of Robbery with a Firearm, three counts of Aggravated Assault, Break and Enter Commit/Dwelling-House, Possess Prohibited Device, and Disguise with Intent.Speaking directly to Richards, Smith said, “We know who you are. We are actively looking for you. Your world just got smaller. I strongly urge you to get a lawyer and turn yourself in.”

What should have been the safety and security of our own home became a terrifying and life-threatening experience.
Three masked individuals forcibly entered our residence, armed with handguns and a hammer. During the attack, three members of our family were shot and are currently recovering in hospital. All four members of our family were also attacked with a hammer, leaving everyone injured and requiring emergency medical attention.
It is difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place where everyone should feel safest: their own home.
Our family is extremely grateful to the Toronto Police Service, emergency responders, paramedics, doctors, nurses and hospital staff who responded so quickly and have been instrumental in providing care and assistance.
We also want to thank our extended family, friends, neighbours and the many people who have reached out with messages of concern, prayers and support. The outpouring of kindness has meant a great deal to us during this incredibly difficult time.
While we are focused on recovery and supporting one another as a family, we are also deeply concerned about the increasing violence associated with home invasions and the safety of families throughout Toronto.
No family should ever have to experience this. People should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes without fear of armed individuals breaking in and threatening their lives.
We sincerely hope that the individuals responsible will be identified, apprehended and brought to justice. We encourage anyone with information that may assist the Toronto Police investigation to come forward.
At this time, we respectfully ask the media and public to allow our family the privacy and time needed to recover from this traumatic experience.
We are a family, and our priority is getting through this together.
