Police have arrested a 35-year-old man after a 31-year-old man, believed to be an EFF member, was stabbed to death in a park opposite a voting station in Polokwane on Thursday.
The stabbing happened at a park opposite Flora Park Comprehensive School, following an altercation between two people said to belong to the same political party.
The victim was among a group of people relaxing at the park when the altercation broke out, police said.
The initial confrontation was reportedly resolved, but the suspect allegedly returned to the scene, confronted the man, and stabbed him in the neck with a knife before fleeing.
Emergency services were called, and the man was declared dead at the scene.
Police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the stabbing.
The suspect was later traced and arrested.
Police said the motive was not yet known and investigations were continuing.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
The killing comes as votes from Wednesday’s municipal elections are being counted across the country.
