“Thoughtful urban planning is vital for sustainable development of cities,” Commissioner, Urban Development, Shakeel Ahmed said in Belagavi on November 4.

“We need to realise the importance of thoughtful urban planning, sustainable development and collaborative efforts in shaping the city’s future,” he told the gathering after inaugurating the three-day DULT Monsoon Design Studio 2026 at Karnatak Law Society’s Gogte Institute of Technology in Belagavi.

Mr. Ahmed shared valuable insights into urban development initiatives and emerging urban challenges in Belagavi. He cited examples from every day problems faced by residents and the solutions attempted by officers of various urban development agencies. He provided participants with a broader understanding of the opportunities and responsibilities involved in creating better urban environments.

The three-day event was organised by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) in association with KNMTA (Karnataka Non-Motorised Transport Agency) and in collaboration with The Department of Architecture, KLS GIT.

Shamanth Kuchangi, head, TETC, DULT, said the collaboration between DULT and the Department of Architecture, KLS GIT, aims to provide students with an opportunity to engage with real-world urban issues and understand the practical dimensions of urban design and development.

Jyoti Patil, HoD, Architecture, highlighted the significance of the workshop in bridging academic learning with professional practice and encouraged students to actively participate, explore innovative ideas, and contribute meaningful design perspectives towards urban development. “It will bring together students, urban design professionals, and experts to explore urban challenges, exchange ideas, and develop design-oriented approaches towards improving the urban environment of Belagavi,” Dr. Patil said.

Speakers included senior urban designer Sandeep Venkataramu, DULT coordinators, and faculty members of the Department of Architecture, KLS GIT, and Priyadarshini Honnur.

Among those present were faculty coordinators Roopali Kavilkar, Priyanka Rajput and Nikhil Bastwadkar, and faculty members.
