A critic of President Donald Trump trolled Fox News in a now-viral clip, telling a reporter for the news station that he came to the president’s South Carolina rally because he wanted to see a “cult.”
Lucas Tomlinson, a reporter with the pro-Trump network, was interviewing members of the MAGA crowd gathered in Rock Hill Thursday to hear Trump stump for Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, as she goes up against Democrat Annie Andrews on Election Day.
Tomlinson asked a man, who gave his name as Tom, why he was at the rally — and was left shocked by the unexpected answer.
“Well, in the late ‘70s, I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre, but this is as close as I’ll ever get, so that’s why I’m here,” Tom says.
When a stunned Tomlinson asked him to clarify what he meant by the Jonestown Massacre — an event that saw 900 members of the Jonestown cult commit suicide in Guyana in 1978 — Tom replied, “There’s nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man.”
Tomlinson then realizes he didn’t pick a Trump supporter to interview, and awkwardly moves on to another subject.
Trump was in South Carolina for the second time this month on Thursday to rally for Graham, who is facing a surprisingly tough challenge from Democrat Annie Andrews for a key U.S. Senate seat.
Graham, who was appointed to her seat in July following the death of her brother. In August, she became the Republican Party’s nominee to succeed him for a full six-year term. However, she has struggled to build connections with voters in that time, causing the race to be closer than the GOP had hoped.
“It’s a f—ing train wreck,” Republican Rep. Nancy Mace said on Wednesday. “It’s a mess.”
Mace told MS NOW that internal numbers show a volatile electorate, with Graham leading in some surveys while trailing in others.
South Carolina has not sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly three decades. Meanwhile, Andrews, a mom and pediatrician, is urging voters to “try something new for once.”
With midterm elections on Tuesday, Trump and other GOP brass have been on a campaign blitz, rallying in battleground states from Texas to Ohio, Iowa, Alaska and beyond.
While Trump was supposed to appear at a rally in Kansas on Saturday, he canceled that appearance and will instead participate in a series of virtual rallies. It wasn’t clear if he would reschedule the visit to Kansas.
