NEWSROOM / Greece’s former Chief of the General Staff, Floros, made remarks targeting Türkiye during a live broadcast on the Athens-based ANT1 television network.

Floros brought up Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ remarks regarding the UN Security Council’s-Libya agreement at the United Nations Security Council, stating, “The Prime Minister made a very strong showing at the UN and conveyed to the world Athens’ red lines regarding Ankara, as well as its defense needs in this regard.”

Floros, noting that Türkiye is increasing its power in the region day by day, made a brazen remark, saying, “Ankara reiterates its resolute stance every time. However, let there be no doubt that, if necessary, we will respond on the ground in a way they will understand. And we will do so successfully,” he said.

The Greek general had also made provocative remarks in an interview with Proto Thema, one of Greece’s leading newspapers, in recent months, saying,“We will burn anyone who sets foot on Greek soil first, and then ask who they are.”

Following Floros’s remarks, Mitsotakis’s statements at the UN Security Council have resurfaced. While the agreement between Türkiye and Libya has remained at the top of Athens’ agenda for days, its repercussions continue to reverberate.

Most recently, in his speech to the UNSC, Mitsotakis stated, “Türkiye and Libya acted as if we didn’t exist. Geography cannot be rewritten. Nor can it be defined by arbitrarily drawn lines on a map. Türkiye and Libya have no shared or adjacent coastlines. Yet they attempted to establish an artificial maritime boundary between them.”

The maritime jurisdiction agreement signed between Türkiye and the Libyan Government of National Accord—which was registered with the United Nations (UN) before it could be officially ratified in the war-torn country—has been finalized. With the agreement’s approval by the Libyan House of Representatives, the legal disputes surrounding it have come to an end, dealing one of the biggest blows to Greece’s maximalist ambitions in the Mediterranean.

In the wake of the Libyan civil war, Türkiye—which has pursued a balanced diplomatic approach with both the areas under Khalifa Haftar’s control and Tripoli, where the Government of National Accord is based—has been one of the strongest supporters of the ceasefire and the reconstruction and development processes that began in 2020.

In tandem with this process, the Agreement on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction Areas in the Mediterranean was drafted to counter the rhetoric of Greece and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean and to strengthen the “Blue Homeland” doctrine.

The signatures affixed on November 27, 2019, with the Government of National Accord brought Greece, along with Egypt, the UAE, Israel, and France, together as a united front against Türkiye. The diplomatic and legal struggle that ensued gained significant momentum with the agreement’s adoption by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on December 5, 2019, its notification to the United Nations on March 18, 2020, and its registration on September 30, 2022.

Although the process faced challenges—such as the Libyan House of Representatives, controlled by Haftar, rejecting the agreement on January 8, 2020, and severing ties with Ankara—the seven-year wait came to an end this year thanks to increased diplomatic efforts, and the agreement passed the Assembly.

The final debates over the agreement—which had been entered into international records even before its approval by the House—have also been resolved. This has thus placed a major obstacle in the way of Greece’s claims based on the Seville Map, which it has been using for over 20 years to confine Türkiye to the Gulf of Antalya.
