Twenty transgender persons aspiring to join the Telangana Police as constables and sub-inspectors will receive four months of specialised coaching and hostel accommodation under an empowerment programme launched by the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens and Transgender Persons, is aimed at helping transgender candidates prepare for the 2026 police recruitment process. The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Telangana Women Safety Wing is coordinating the programme.
At the inaugural event, Malkajgiri Commissioner of Police B. Sumathi distributed study material to the 20 selected candidates, covering Indian and Telangana history, arithmetic and reasoning, geography, current affairs and economics. The department has sanctioned ₹3.50 lakh towards their coaching and hostel expenses following a request from the Commissioner of Police.
The candidates will be guided through Unique Coaching Centre and given accommodation at Kalpana Hostel in Dilsukhnagar. A dedicated WhatsApp group covering the candidates, AHTU officers, departmental representatives, coaching faculty and hostel management has been formed to monitor their progress and provide support.
Ms. Sumathi said the candidates would receive regular coaching and accommodation, while their progress will be closely monitored by AHTU.
The Women Safety Wing will also explore suitable duty adjustments, subject to departmental rules, to enable serving Traffic Assistants to attend coaching and physical fitness training.
Several transgender persons are already working as Traffic Assistants in Hyderabad, including two under the Malkajgiri Commissionerate.
