ISLAMABAD, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Two police personnel were killed and another was injured in an exchange of fire with militants during an ongoing polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in Mohmand district, where the personnel were performing security duties for the anti-polio campaign, according to a police report.

The injured policeman has been shifted to a nearby hospital while the militants fled the scene following the attack, the report added.

The area has been cordoned off for investigation.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries worldwide where polio remains endemic. Vaccination campaigns in Pakistan are conducted regularly to immunize children against the disease. ■
